The Maine Coast Skaters Association T3 Bantams traveled to the State Championship tournament this past weekend as the No. 1 seed, tied in points with Central Maine Youth Hockey. Both teams had a 24 game season record of 17-3-4. Not only were we tied in points, all three season games that we played against CMYHA had ended as 2-2 ties. We got the No. 1 seed over them due to our Goals For-Goals Against differential for the season. MCSA had a GF-GA of 73, while CMYHA had a GF-GA of 39.
MCSA had three shutouts in the round robin portion of the tournament on Friday and Saturday – winning 6-0 over Portland Junior Pirates Saco, 10-0 over the Freeze from the Bangor area and 2-0 over Casco Bay Orange. Drew Sorterup stood large in net to earn the first two shutout victories.
The Casco Bay Orange game was an incredibly hard fought game that turned into a goalie battle. The first period was scoreless. The second period was incredibly fast end to end with Perrin Bonner-Ganter scoring with assists from Nick Czuchra and Joe Bridges. The third period was equally as fast with Casco pulling their goalie in the final 2 minutes trying to get the tying goal. Nick Czuchra ended up scoring a long range empty net goal with 0:38 seconds remaining to provide the insurance marker. MCSA had 27 shots (26 with the goalie in net) vs Casco’s 25 shots on Zach Hand. A true goalie battle.
In the semifinal game Sunday morning, MCSA had to face off against Casco Bay Black. The first period of this game was scoreless with Casco Black showing they came to play when they scored midway through the second period. As the second period wound down, Austin Gallant scored on a feed from Matt Morse to tie up the game 1-1. The third period was incredibly fast, end to end hockey with Perrin Bonner-Ganter scoring the game winner with assists from Kieran Lydon and Joe Bridges. "Perrin definitely had both Casco teams number this weekend – scoring the game winner in both games." said coach Steve Hand.
On to the championship game, but we had to watch CMYHA play Casco Orange in the other semifinal to determine our challenger. This game continued to prove the tight competition in the league with CMYHA winning over Casco Orange in a shootout.
The championship game was by far the fastest pace game that MCSA has played all year. Both goalies stood on their heads making save after save in the first period. Early in the second CMYHA scored a power play goal to take the 1-0 lead. Early in the third period, Will Davee, fresh on the ice after serving a penalty, sent a pass to Joe Bridges who streaked in down the left side and scored with a blistering wrist shot to tie the game at 1-1. Three minutes later, Nick Czuchra scored on a big individual effort, breaking into the zone heading left and shooting to right, barely grabbing the right post and into the goal with what would become the 2-1 game winner.
CMYHA put MCSA into the pressure cooker during the final six minutes trying everything to score the tying goal. CMYHA’s Dameron Rodrigue looked to have beaten MCSA netminder Zach Hand in the final 15 seconds, but somehow Hand got his arm down across the goal line and the puck deflected behind the net. Joe Bridges collected the puck and chipped it out to center ice to end the game.
The team finished the weekend with 22 GF and two GA in five games. The two Goals Against comes from the teams continued focus on everything starts in the defensive end, where you do nothing fancy, you just do the smart thing. Most of these young men have played together for six plus years now and head coach Steve Hand has had the good fortune to be their coach most of those years. The coaches include Steve Hand, Darryl Czuchra, Didier Bonner-Ganter and Grant Sorterup. The coaches put forth one common theme throughout the years “Practice and Play to the Best of Your Ability for the Benefit of the Team Every Time You Step on the Ice”. The team has 11 skaters and two goalies this season. In the five games of the state tournament, all 11 skaters scored or assisted and both goalies played phenomenally.
This was this groups third trip to the TIER 3 state championship game. In 2009 as Squirts they lost in the final game. In 2011 they came back as PeeWees to win the championship in a shootout and in 2013 they were able to make it back and win the championship without the drama of the shootout.
The team now goes to South Burlington, Vt to play in the Yankee Hockey Conference Sectionals, March 15–17.
More importantly, MCSA continues to show great growth in its programs with one small measure being that all three T3 MCSA teams (Squirts, PeeWees and Bantams) made it to the championship game in their respective tournaments this season.

Hi MCSA,
A great BIG thank you to all the parents and volunteers for helping with the player evaluations and team selections (squirt, peewee and bantam) the last couple of weeks. What an astronomical task it is to pull of such a thorough evaluation of 82 hockey players. A special thank you to Dave Daniello and Jesse Simko for their leadership and expertise in this effort.
Before you read the results, PLEASE consider volunteering as a Team Manager (aka Team Parent). Without volunteers, local youth hockey would not exist. Please contact info@mainecoastskaters.org to learn more and thank you for your consideration.
In addition to team managers, we need several volunteers (parents) from each team for the responsibility of Locker Room Monitor. It's simple, we need two (2) adults in each locker room whenever there are kids in the the rooms. This may seem like a challenge, but it's not impossible, and a very reasonable request. We're a great big family and we need to work together to guarantee the safety of our children. Team Managers will relay information about this role to parents and coordinate proper coverage. In the meantime, please take it upon yourself to get the culture of locker room supervision at MCSA started. THANK YOU.
IMPORTANT - the Bantams T3 Team has a game this Saturday, October 20 - visit the Bantams T3 page for schedule details
TEAM ROSTERS - It looks like we've got 7 great teams lined up to represent MCSA this season. Visit our homepage to view the team rosters.
GO STORM !!!
Please arrive to practice 30 minutes early on October 25, 26 and 27 wearing your game jerseys. Your coaches or team managers will distribute jerseys at the first practice this week OR have them ready for you prior to having photos taken.
Ron Hawkes will be setup for photos in the party room at the back of the rink. Please bring cash or checks with completed forms.
Packages and rates will be posted here ASAP

Hello MCSA Families,
This is a simple reminder to everyone that second installments for registration fees (all teams and programs) and travel fees (for T3 teams) are due today!
For those who used the two (2) installment credit card option online, you should have received an email directly from the website notifying you of a successful payment transaction. There were a few credit card transactions that "failed" and we will be reaching out to those individuals directly. Sometimes a credit card has been changed or automated recurring transactions are blocked. Technology is wonderful when it works!
If you elected for two (2) installments via cash or check (payable to MCSA), please submit payment ASAP. We will be emailing and making phone calls to remind you. Thank you for your attention to this detail. Our finance team prefer to be enjoying their children playing hockey much more than chasing people for money.
Shelley Winchenbach, Scott Carlson and your team manager are able to receive your payments. Please contact info@mainecoastskaters.org if you have any questions.

Please read schedule details carefully !
...have fun if you are taking a vacation...travel safe...eat lots of healthy food...

5:30 - 6:30 PM Cross Ice Program
5:30 - 6:30 PM Squirt T4
Greetings hockey families, players, and friends! The 2012-13 MCSA hockey season is finally upon us and we're off to a great start. For those of you who are new to our association: welcome! And to those returning, familiar faces: welcome back! The start of the season is a busy time for our organization; many volunteers have been working hard planning and organizing so that our players can have a rewarding and successful season. The MCSA board, which is a blend of new and veteran members, along with the coaches, and all our volunteers are excited to move forward with the season. As you begin to settle into the routine of the season, you may have already noticed some changes or differences, as well as some of the usual activities that mark the coming of hockey in the midcoast. Here are just a few new things coming this year:
2012-13 MCSA Raffle Committment
Please Note: Atoms and Cross Ice Program skaters are exempt from this commitment
Proceeds fund each teams (Squirts, PeeWees, Bantams and Girls) participation in one (1) end of season of tournament as well as help offset the costs of youth hockey.
MCSA requires each players (and parent's) commitment to sell 20 - $5 Raffle Tickets equaling a value of $100. If parents prefers to purchase all tickets at the outset, they may do so. Keep the tickets for yourself or give them out as gifts to your friends.
CASH PRIZES ~ $750 First, $500 Second and $250 Third
DRAWING DATE ~ December 31, 2012
Your team managers will be distributing tickets and collecting the funds and ticket stubs.
Please make any check payments made payable to MCSA.
This program is very important to our organization. Notification of the requirement was made during your initial player registration process and members from past seasons have participated in the raffle ticket program.
Thank you for your continued support of local youth hockey.
GO STORM !!!
Hello MCSA Families,
My apologies for being so quiet with association news. I’m at the rink just about every day of the week, so I have a pretty good feel for how each team or program is doing. In my opinion, MCSA is as healthy as it’s ever been, and I anticipate a strong finish to the regular MEAHA season. Nice job everyone…skaters, coaches, parents and volunteers!
We have a lot going on, so I will get down to business.
ADM ~ American Development Model www.admkids.com
The ADM practice sessions that Jesse Simko has integrated into our programs are really making a difference in the way our kids are developing their skills, whether they be new skaters or veterans of the association. The vision that David Tassoni and John Magri had a few short years ago, to put extra focus and resources on developing our children’s skating skills is working! The idea to create an MCSA “brand” of skater and ultimately stronger hockey players and teams is truly becoming a reality, right before our eyes. Make sure you take a moment to thank them, and Jesse, when you see them at the rink. All the MCSA coaches for that matter! It takes a community…
It was brought to my attention at the board meeting last night that there are a handful of skaters who have been “skipping” these ADM sessions. If your child is NOT taking advantage of these sessions, they are not only doing themselves a disservice, but they are letting their team and our association down. Please email info@mainecoastskaters.org or speak to me at the rink if you feel strongly about the value of these sessions. Your constructive feedback is appreciated.
ATOMS INTERMISSION @ VARSITY GAME Saturday, December 15th @ 6:00 PM
Youth hockey simply doesn't get any better than this! Come watch a fast paced varsity HS hockey game and then enjoy the coolest hockey players in the midcoast (our 3 to 6 year old Atoms skaters) scrimmage for 3 to 5 minutes during the intermission between the first and second periods. I guarantee the Atoms will get more attention than the varsity players. This year we have a HUGE batch of Atoms...so it is bound to be a blockbuster event.
RAFFLE TICKET SALES
This critical fundraising program ONLY applies to teams at the squirt, peewee, bantam and girls levels. Tickets have been distributed by team managers and Liz Sullivan, our Raffle Committee Chair, has requested that the ticket stubs and proceeds be returned by Friday, December 21st. If you are wondering why so soon…many families travel during the holidays and collecting the tickets becomes next to impossible. THANK YOU for working with your team managers to meet the 21st deadline.

Dear MCSA Families and Friends,
Mark your calendars for Friday evening, February 1st!! It’s time for the annual Hat Trick Auction, the annual fundraiser that helps tremendously to support over 160 youth and high school ice hockey players in the Midcoast.
The auction benefits Maine Coast Skaters Association Youth Hockey, the Mid-Coast Ice Cats, and the Camden Hills Regional High School Windjammers. The home ice of all three organizations is at Midcoast Recreation Center in Rockport, where hockey players from fledgling Atoms to mighty Midgets spend full-filled winters chasing the puck, building strong teams, and learning good sportsmanship.
BUT!! All programs depend on volunteer effort to continue building strong programs, and this year is no exception. The auction, now in its 8th year, represents opportunity to raise money that is split 3 ways and benefits equally the three organizations. Since 2006, the Hat Trick Auction has risen over $200,000, with an annual goal of $30,000, and YOU are all invited to an absolutely wonderful evening that is lively, festive and fun.
How can you help? By getting involved! Help is needed in seeking donations, decorating, setting and cleaning up, or with any of the tasks that arise. Please contact Saxon Moreau at 322-2126 or saxonmoreau@yahoo.com to learn more about how you can assist with making this auction another successful event for Midcoast hockey.
Details: The auction this is being held at the Elks Club on Rankin St, Rockland at 6 p.m. on Friday, February 1st.
Donations are GREATLY appreciated and needed! Imaginative, helpful, fun items that can be auctioned, either to be featured in the live or in the silent auction, are now being solicited, contact Saxon Moreau at saxonmoreau@yahoo.com for more information or to receive a donation contract.
CLICK HERE for an online verison of the donation contract.
CLICK HERE for an online verison of the event flyer (please share with your friends).
Successful auction items in the past have ranged from a weekend at a New York City apartment to a pool party in Rockland to a killer chocolate birthday cake. ANYTHING ELSE??
Individual tickets cost $35.00 and include a tasty meal of pork roast, with a vegetarian option of lasagna. There will be a cash bar. Groups are also invited to buy a table, of eight settings. Tables are priced at $280 for 8, to purchase tickets, contact Todd Beacham at 207-505-6124 or email: tbeacham29@gmail.com
Please plan on attending this annual event that brings together the three tightly knit organizations. Ice Hockey in the Midcoast builds not only community that bridges town and city lines, but lifelong friendships forged on the strongest of ice. Let’s stay in the zone!!
This exciting new event is organized by Jesse Simko and many other MCSA and local ice hockey supporters and enthusiasts. Proceeds go toward supporting local youth hockey programs, including MCSA.
Pull together a team of 4 to 6 players (18 and older) and have a great time at a great venue for a great cause. Visit www.mainepondhockey.com to register online today!

Each season our association conducts player evaluations (tryouts) for the purpose of determining how many teams we will declare at each competitive level (Tier 3 and Tier 4) with Maine Amateur Hockey Association (MEAHA). MEAHA is our governing state organization and they coordinate the leagues that our teams compete in during the regular season.
New this year is a MEAHA requirement that we conduct our player evaluations in the spring. If your skater/player wants to be considered for Tier 3 (travel) hockey during the 2013-14 season, please make certain they participate in the appropriate sessions outlined here.

EVALUATIONS ARE FOR ALL SKATERS
Hockey is a sport that can be enjoyed by recreational and comeptitive players. MCSA encourages ALL SKATERS in the age categories listed below to participate in the evaluations.
In addition to selecting players for teams, evaluations are an opportunity for MCSA skaters to complete their "Hockey Scorecard" , a process that was initiated during evaluations at the beginning of the current season. "Hockey Scorecards", are a valuable tool for parents and skaters to learn how their skills developed over the season and a great way to plan for summer training and preparation for next season. Results will be distributed to each family after the process has been completed.
Please, remember you will be evaluated in the age classification you will participate at in the 2013-14 season.

It has been a season to remember for the Maine Coast Skaters Association’s Tier III Squirt team. The squirts finished their regular season with a 12-3-3 record, and headed into championship weekend in Biddeford as the number one team in the Tier III league.
“The league was very close this year,” said MCSA Head Coach Dave Daniello. “Every game with the exception of a few was a one or two goal game. I knew coming into the tournament we would have to play well and every team had an opportunity to be the champ.”
The squirts opened their tournament on Friday night against the Maine Gladiators at the Biddeford Ice Arena. The Gladiators had finished the season in fourth place, but had tied MCSA twice during the 18-game regular season. This was a hard fought game. MCSA gained a two goal lead, but the Gladiators battled hard to make the game 2 – 1. In the final minute of play with MCSA on the penalty kill, the Gladiators pulled their goalie for a two-man advantage. MCSA was able to clear the puck on a couple of occasions, and goalie Jackson Bernier made a save late to secure the first victory.
On Saturday morning, it was the early game MCSA had to contend with. A late night on Friday, and meeting at the rink at 7 a.m. was a tall order for the crew after the energy they used to hold on the night before. Not only was it the early game, but it was against Casco Bay, which finished second during the season and were cause for two of MCSA’s three losses on the season. This game was a battle for the ages with both goalies making tremendous saves to keep the game scoreless. Then in the second period, Megan Daniello was served a minor penalty for interference. Casco Bay found the net on the power play quickly to get the first goal of the game. The period would end Casco Bay 1 – MCSA 0.
The Storm’s coaches knew they had to try something to generate a spark and get a score. That spark came one minute into the third period when Casco Bay found themselves in the penalty box. Coaches Daniello and Moreau put out a power play line of Charlie Griebel, Kevin Moreau and Quinn Brown. The trio clicked instantly as Griebel received a pass from Brown and sailed in on the Casco goalie burying his shot, and tying the game at one. The Storm defense went into lockdown mode with Coach Johnson calling the shots, as they kept the puck to the outside and blocked several shot attempts by Casco’s forwards. As the period continued, Casco once again was served with a minor penalty, and once again MCSA responded with the go-ahead-goal.
Minutes later, Jakob Johnson found himself alone on a break in the Casco Bay end and buried the puck short side to give MCSA a 2-goal lead. Casco Bay did not back down however. They pushed back at the MCSA squirts and were able to get a goal to make it a 1-goal game again.
“After that goal, the stress level went thru the roof” said Daniello. “It was beyond tense, and with Casco Bay pulling their goalie it was a dogfight."
Casco turned it on with steam to try and tie the game. The battle raged in the MCSA end of the ice, as Casco Bay pushed toward the MCSA net. The Storm pushed back and gave it everything they had as the puck finally crossed the blue-line and the horn sounded. MCSA 3 – Casco Bay 2.
With this victory, the Storm earned a berth in the Championship game. And for their efforts, Coach Daniello allowed the players to blow off some steam and let them swim between games. Next up for MCSA were the Southern Maine Breakers. At that point it was undetermined who MCSA would face on Sunday. Even though the game meant virtually nothing for MCSA, it might mean everything to the Breakers.
The second tournament game of the morning was a match of third- and fourth-place teams as the Gladiators faced the Breakers. The winner of this game would have a chance to get to Sunday. Coach Daniello stayed to watch, as the Gladiators took a 4-goal lead into the second period and eventually won the game 5 – 1. This meant that the Gladiator — Casco Bay game would determine the match-up for Sunday’s State Championship game.
You would have thought the Biddeford Ice Arena was Disney World as the place was packed with fans and interested on-lookers wehn the Casco Bay — Gladiator game started. If you took a poll, most people in the rink would have told you Casco Bay had the advantage, but Coach Daniello felt differently. Because of tie breakers, he felt the Gladiators had the advantage as they could win or tie to get the chance to play on Sunday. Casco Bay knew they had to win. The two teams had played a 3 – 3 game earlier in the year, as well as, 0 – 0 and 1 – 0 games. This game would prove to be much closer than most people predicted.
Casco Bay worked hard and built a two-goal lead during the second period. The Gladiators responded half-way thru the third to make it 2 – 1. The Gladiators continued to push and gain momentum into the final minute of play, keeping the puck in the Casco Bay end for long durations. With under a minute left it looked as though Casco would squeak out a victory as they had the puck in the Gladiators’ end of the ice. The Gladiators put on one last rush — a rush for the ages. With .47 seconds remaining, the Gladiators entered the Casco Bay zone and threw the puck on net. Casco Bay’s goalie was up to the challenge, but gave up a rebound as another Gladiator cruised in and put the puck in the net to tie the game. The rink went crazy as the Gladiators were now in position to play for a State Championship as the fourth and last-place team in the regular season. Casco Bay would pull their goalie to no avail, as the Gladiators tied the game and forced their way into Sunday.
This meant the final game on Saturday had no bearing on Sunday’s match-up as the 2 - 0 MCSA Storm faced off with the 0 - 2 Southern Maine Breakers. The game did mean a lot to MCSA, as they wanted to move to Sunday with momentum, so they played the game like it was the State Championship. The Storm cruised to a 7- 2 victory and headed to the hotel for some partying (kid style) and to get ready for their biggest battle of the year.
As game time approached Sunday afternoon, there was energy in the locker room the coaches hadn’t seen before. It was if every player understood the meaning of the game, and they knew they were prepared. As some players took their time getting ready, others dressed quickly and went to the bench and sat and gazed at the ice surface. Thinking about the game, going over different scenarios in their heads, and preparing themselves for what was no doubt to come.
Coach Thibeault came out of the locker room and said “It’s quiet in there!” Coach Daniello replied “They are okay.”
One of the most important things Coach Daniello wanted to do this year was have the players prepare for every game the exact same way. Get to the rink. Do the pre-game warm up. Go into the locker room and dress, and with 15 minutes to go – do the pre-game speeches. This was the routine all season, for every game, and this weekend would be no different.
“We even had a routine for the pre-game talk” said Daniello. “I would give the kids my focuses for the game, and then it was Coach Roger, Coach Mike, Coach Ed, and Coach Jamie. Coach Neal would be the one to bring up the energy and get them frothing at the mouth to play the game. Last, just before we left the room, I would bring them all together; give one final word of wisdom and '1-2-3 Storm!' That was the routine.”
But Daniello also discovered a rallying cry for the team on Friday night by chance. “On Friday, during my pre-game talk, I said to the kids – If you can do what I’m asking, GIVE ME A HELL YEAH! The players immediately responded. Coach Neal said it was like the kids thought they were getting away with something bad and fun, but really not bad. As the weekend progressed, the 'HELL YEAH' chant became the mojo. A coach would ask a question and out of the blue someone would respond – 'HELL YEAH!' It was great! It was like the final piece to the puzzle. It really brought them together,” said Daniello.
The coaches met before the game and knew if the Strom scored early and often, it would demoralize the Gladiator bench. The plan was an early line change, to hit them with a lot of energy in the very first shift. It worked! As MCSA completed their first line change after about 40 seconds, Charlie Griebel caught the Gladiator defense in a change and buried the first goal. On the ensuing face-off, the Griebel-Brown-Luke Jordan line did it again. It was 2 – 0 only 1:15 into the game.
“I think it was Coach Johnson who came up with the idea. I still can’t believe it worked,” said Daniello. Later in the period, that line was able to do it again as Luke Jordan found the back of the net to make it 3 – 0 at the end of the first period.
The second period would prove to be a grind as neither team would score and a few penalties were taken. The score was still 3 – 0 and the Gladiators had a history of late game heroics.
The third period started and the Gladiators immediately drove into the Storm’s end. A fierce battle arose as players were fighting for every inch of space as the puck entered the slot. A Gladiator player found the puck on his stick – fired it at the MCSA goal – and just like that it was 3 – 1.
The next goal would prove to be the difference in the game. The team that struck next would undoubtedly win. The Storm would get that goal. Jakob Johnson would light the lamp to make the score 4 – 1 and you could see the emotion drain from the Gladiator bench as time continued to wind down. Johnson again would find the back of the net with under 2 minutes remaining – This time shorthanded, to make the score 5 -1. This is how the game would end with the MCSA Storm the Squirt Tier III State Champions.
The Storm defense of Isa Brown, Megan Daniello, Andrew Orne, Ben Wells, Nolan Delahey, and Jeret Winchenbach were phenomenal. “It was the best game the defense played all year. They were confident, keeping the pucks in the Gladiator end, blocking shots….. It was a complete effort,” said Daniello.
“It wasn’t just the defense however; Nick Tausek, Lulu Lydon, Levi Guay, and Hayden Thibeault all had the best games of their seasons. It didn’t matter if it was a power play, penalty kill, or even-strength, every player made significant contributions during the game and kept pressure on the Gladiators every time they touched the puck. Every player shared in this victory equally! It was perfect” said Daniello “HELL YEAH!”
Don't quote me on this, but the rough estimate is near $30,000 raised to support the 3 local youth hockey programs. A formal announcement will be released very soon.
Thank you to everyone who volunteered, donated and purchased items. The level of generousity and support is simply amazing. We should all be proud to be part of such a healthy organization.
GO STORM !!!
Hello MCSA Families
A very brief email to notify all 2000 and 1999 birth year players (boys and girls) that the supplementary evaluation has been re-scheduled to Friday, March 22 @ 6:40 PM. Coaches and Team Managers of these skaters, please help us spread the word. The date change is the result of several conflicts and unavoidable factors. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
CONGRATULATIONS
The MCSA Bantam T3 team put together an amazing run at the sectional tournament in Vermont this weekend. They made it to the final championship game, losing to a Vermont team in overtime. WOW! It was fun to follow along on facebook as the event progressed through the weekend. When we have a full report it will be shared here on our website. MCSA should not only take great pride in how this team represented our association, but how they represented the state of Maine. Great job team!!!
The PeeWee T4 team also put together a great series of game at the Lakers Tournament in Worcester Mass this weekend, also making it to the championship game, but losing to their opponent in a close game. A highlight for the kids was their victory over the reigning Connecticut PeeWee Tier 4 State Champions in their second game. What a fun way to wrap up a very successful season.
Reports indicate that the Atoms Marathon Jamboree on Saturday was also a tremendous success. Thank you to everyone for their support and participation. It is enthusiasm like this that tells me the future at MCSA will be nothing short of brilliant!!!
See you all on Thursday night at the FREE skate and Coaches Game!
